How to Write a Good ChatGPT Prompt
A good ChatGPT prompt has four parts: role, context, format, and constraints. Leave one out and ChatGPT fills the gap with a guess - usually a generic one. Add all four and the first output is usually the one you actually use.
Most people know what the four parts are once they see them listed. The part that does not scale is doing it every time, for every prompt, without forgetting one. That is the actual failure mode - not ignorance, fatigue.

After
Role: conversion copywriter for an indie SaaS founder. Context: [pasted product description]. Audience: developers evaluating tools on a Friday afternoon, low patience for hype. Format: headline, subhead, 3 bullet benefits, one CTA line. Constraints: under 60 words total, no adjectives like seamless or revolutionary.
The four parts, in order
Role: tell it who it is writing as. Not you are an expert - that is decoration. Give it a specific seat: senior backend engineer reviewing a pull request, not a helpful assistant. Missing role sounds like a Wikipedia summary. Confident, generic, nobody's voice.
Context: paste the actual thing you are working from - the draft, the product description, the error message. ChatGPT cannot infer facts it was not given. If you say make this better without pasting this, it is guessing what this is.
Format: say what shape the answer should take: 5 bullets, a table, 3 labeled sections, under 100 words. Without a format, you get a wall of paragraphs by default, because that is the model's safest fallback.
Constraints: the stop rules. No disclaimers, max 150 words, do not invent statistics. Constraints are what stop the model from padding - and padding is the single most common ChatGPT complaint.
